The Company:

Indian Railways plays a key role in meeting the transport needs of the country. Railways traverse the length and breadth of the country covering 63,140 routes, with 14,444 trains running daily. Indian Railways is the nation’s primary method of transportation and has the distinction of being one of the largest railway systems in the world. More information can be found at www.scrailway.gov.in/web.

The Challenge:

Indian Railways is a very prestigious customer of Zoom Technologies, which designs and implements corporate networks and network security systems The entire technical support for Indian Railway’s network is provided by Zoom Technologies. Due to this relationship, Zoom was able to propose Kaspersky Antivirus software for their network.

Being a government organization, the purchase had to be done through a tendering process. Most of the senior decision makers had never heard of Kaspersky and wanted to go with products such as Symantec or McAfee. Another challenge was that the antivirus had to be installed on a network which was spread over a wide geographical location.

The Solution:

To show why Kaspersky was a better choice than other products, a demo was arranged by Zoom, which was attended by the top officers and the complete technical team. Some of the decision makers were really impressed by other customers who had Kaspersky installed on their networks.

A team of 20 engineers were deployed to install Kaspersky on the entire network. The computers were in separate workgroups and under different administration passwords. Many systems were running Windows 98 which were so badly infected that there was no option but to format the system and freshly reinstall the operating system before Kaspersky could be installed.

"Installing Kaspersky was a wise decision as the high detection rate and frequency of updates have reduced the amount of support calls drastically"
D. Anandam, Section Engineer, Signal and Telecom Department, SC Railway

Conclusion:

Currently 2000 systems have been installed with Kaspersky in different geographical locations. management of these systems is done via the Administration Kit installed at Indian Railways. Already, some of the other divisions have started to place orders for Kaspersky Antivirus.
