“No Access to Patient Data Would Be a Nightmare”

The number of malicious programs circulating on the Internet is increasingly rapidly by the day. Hospitals, too, are increasingly falling victim to virus attacks, the consequences of which – from infection of crucial servers to total network outages – are grave. No access to patient data, treatment information or billing systems is a nightmare scenario.

The Challenge

Previously, Katholische Klinikum Mainz (Mainz Catholic Hospital) had a competitor's solution installed. However, the security solution did not live up to expectations: during a virus outbreak, the hospital found itself completely unprotected. In order to prevent such a situation in the future, the hospital needed to find a security solution it could trust.

The Solution

Katholische Klinikum Mainz decided to install Kaspersky Open Space Security at its two locations, the St. Vincenz and Elisabeth Hospital and the St. Hildegardis Krankenhaus, with protection covering 30 servers and 650 workstations on multiple platforms.

The Kaspersky solution provides reliable protection for corporate networks, which are increasingly becoming open systems with constantly-changing requirements. “Such open networks are, of course, more difficult to monitor and are thus more susceptible to current threats. And these threats are now specifically targeting hospitals like us”, says Müller, an IT administrator at the hospital.

Conclusion

“Kaspersky fits perfectly with our infrastructure, because it comprises protective solutions for the most diverse network nodes – from workstations and laptops to smartphones to Internet Gateways,” says Müller. Kaspersky Open Space Security thus provides complete protection for dynamic corporate networks, regardless of size or geographical distribution. That the company’s hotline “provided quick and competent assistance during the implementation” was a further point in favour of the Kaspersky Lab solution.

The solution now monitors all incoming and outgoing data: emails, Internet traffic and network activity. Kaspersky Open Space Security contains components to protect workstations, servers and mobile devices to ensure secure user access to both corporate data and the Internet and to facilitate secure communication via email.

Müller concludes: “It’s also important to keep economics in mind – particularly in the healthcare industry. And Kaspersky Lab’s professional product turned out to have the best price/performance ratio. All in all, it’s been a complete success!”

About Katholische Klinikum Mainz

Katholische Klinikum Mainz is a church-sponsored institution of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Mainz, operated under the auspices of the Caritaswerk St. Martin. It was created by merging two formerly independent hospitals, the St. Vincenz and Elisabeth Hospital and the St. Hildegardis Krankenhaus.

The hospitals were founded in the spirit of their respective patron saints to aid and care for the sick and needy.
