Free to download… and free to use
Kaspersky Security Scan offers you a free-of-charge way to scan your PC in order to detect viruses, Trojan programs, worms and other malicious objects. Because it accesses the same databases that are used for Kaspersky’s commercial products, Kaspersky Security Scan can detect all known malware (except complex rootkits).
The latest data… to find the latest threats
Kaspersky Security Scan uses the latest Kaspersky Lab technologies – plus real-time information from Kaspersky Lab’s servers in the ‘cloud’ – to ensure it can scan your PC for the latest viruses and emerging threats.
Multi-layered scanning
Three layers of scanning help to identify different types of security problems. First, Kaspersky Security Scan checks whether there’s up-to-date antivirus protection and an active firewall on your PC. Then it uses traditional analysis and ‘cloud technologies’ to scan for malicious programs and threats. Finally, it checks your PC for vulnerabilities and non-malware security issues.
Keeps you informed
After your scan, you’ll get a report on all of the threats and vulnerabilities that Kaspersky Security Scan has found on your PC. You’ll also get suggestions on how Kaspersky Lab security products can help to remedy any security problems and protect your PC.
Easy to download… even if you already have antivirus
Downloading and installing Kaspersky Security Scan usually only takes a few minutes – and there’s no need to worry about conflicts with your firewall or a third-party antivirus product that’s already installed on your PC. Even if you already run antivirus software, Kaspersky Security Scan lets you double-check important security issues.
Easy to use… and always up-to-date
With a simple and intuitive interface, Kaspersky Security Scan is easy to use. After you’ve installed it, Kaspersky Security Scan will receive daily updates to its antivirus and vulnerabilities databases. Furthermore, whenever we release an upgrade, you will be prompted to install the latest version. Upgrades are easy and fast to install.
What is Kaspersky Security Scan?
Kaspersky Security Scan is a great tool for scanning your PC in order to detect an active infection, software vulnerabilities and other non-malware security problems. Kaspersky Security Scan can also be used as a tool to get a ‘second opinion’ and double-check the state of the security on your PC.
However, Kaspersky Security Scan does not offer protection for your PC. If you would like to have advanced, real-time protection against all types of cyber threats, please consider using one of our commercial products – such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 or Kaspersky PURE 2.0 (Crystal).
Will Kaspersky Security Scan fix any problems which it finds?
No. Kaspersky Security Scan won't fix, modify or delete any threats or security problems. However, after checking your PC, Kaspersky Security Scan will provide you with a detailed report on the threats and where they were found.
How long can I use Kaspersky Security Scan for free?
Kaspersky Security Scan will remain on your computer until you uninstall it. You can continue to run scans and receive detailed reports, free of charge.
Why should I use Kaspersky Security Scan if I already have antivirus software on my PC?
Even if you already have an antivirus product on your PC, you can install Kaspersky Security Scan – free of charge. It’s a great way to get a second opinion about your PC security status – from a recognised leader in IT security. Kaspersky Security Scan is quick and easy to install – and you will not need to uninstall your other antivirus product.
Do I have to remove my antivirus/firewall before installing Kaspersky Security Scan?
No. Kaspersky Security Scan works on PCs that already have other antivirus products installed on them. Kaspersky Security Scan also works on PCs that have an activated firewall.
Does Kaspersky Security Scan use exactly the same detection technologies as Kaspersky's commercial products?
Kaspersky Security Scan only uses an on-demand scanner to find threats on the user's PC. If malware is present on your hard drive, Kaspersky Security Scan will find it. Daily updatable antivirus databases and a constant connection to the ‘cloud-based’ Kaspersky Security Network service allow Kaspersky Security Scan to find the latest threats. In order to avoid infection, you should use real-time protection – such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 or Kaspersky PURE 2.0.
Can Kaspersky Security Scan detect the latest threats?
Yes. Kaspersky Security Scan accesses Kaspersky Lab servers in the ‘cloud’, so that Kaspersky Security Scan can use real-time information about all new and emerging threats – to ensure Kaspersky Security Scan scans for the latest threats. Kaspersky Security Scan doesn't detect complex rootkits.
What is the difference between quick scan and full scan?
A full scan checks the whole PC, including removable devices and the entire hard drive. A quick scan checks only critical areas that can be more vulnerable – such as system memory and any objects/files that automatically run when you switch your PC on.
What does Kaspersky Security Scan scan on my PC during a full scan?
Kaspersky Security Scan performs three levels of scanning during a full scan:
- Kaspersky Security Scan checks Windows security status: Is there any antivirus software or a firewall already installed on the PC – and are the antivirus software and firewall currently up-to-date and switched on?
- Scanning for malware: Is there any known malware on the PC?
- Scanning for software vulnerabilities and non-malware security issues: Are there any software vulnerabilities (these can be a prime entry-point for viruses, malware and hackers)? Are there any other potential security issues – such as cookies, cached passwords or traces of Trojans?
During a scan, will Kaspersky Security Scan use a lot of my PC’s resources?
Kaspersky Security Scan is designed to be efficient in its use of a PC’s resources. Kaspersky Security Scan will have minimal impact on the performance of most PCs – so users can work, as usual, on their PCs.
Can I stop a scan after it has started?
Yes. You can stop a scan from the main window.
How many times a week does Kaspersky Security Scan scan my PC?
By default, Kaspersky Security Scan will perform three regular scans per week. The very first scan you perform will be visible to you. Thereafter, one scan per week will be visible to you and two further scans will run in the background. These background scans will only alert you if they find a dangerous threat. You may also run a manual scan at any time, or you can schedule automatic scans.
Can I change a scanning schedule?
Yes. Kaspersky Security Scan helps you to optimise a schedule of regular scans. If you wish, you can change the days of the regular scans.
Can I use Kaspersky Security Scan to scan USB storage devices when I connect them to my PC?
Yes. Your USB storage devices will be automatically scanned. However, the devices can only be scanned during a visible scan.
How often do the threat databases get updated?
Upon installation, Kaspersky Security Scan will receive daily updates to its antivirus and vulnerabilities databases.
If I decide to buy a Kaspersky Lab product to protect my PC, will I need to remove Kaspersky Security Scan?
Yes. You should remove Kaspersky Security Scan before installing other Kaspersky Lab products. Because Kaspersky Lab has products that can provide you with complete scanning technologies and real-time, ‘round-the-clock’ protection, it’s not necessary to keep Kaspersky Security Scan on your PC if you install the relevant Kaspersky Lab security product.
