{"id":22494,"date":"2021-03-29T10:19:21","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T09:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.co.uk\/blog\/?p=22494"},"modified":"2021-03-29T10:19:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T09:19:21","slug":"what-we-learned-at-kaspersky-next21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.co.uk\/blog\/what-we-learned-at-kaspersky-next21\/22494\/","title":{"rendered":"What we learned at Kaspersky NEXT 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the recent Kaspersky NEXT 2021 debate, talk focused around the imminent augmentation issues, particularly around privacy, security, regulation and changing attitudes to bionics.<\/p>\n<p>Held online, the debate was hosted by technology journalist and presenter, <strong>Kate Russell<\/strong>, and featured a range of experts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tilly Lockey<\/strong> \u2013 bionic model, presenter, speaker and all-round disruptor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bertolt Meyer<\/strong> \u2013 professor of Work and Economic Psychology at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viktoria Modesta \u2013<\/strong> bionic pop artist, creative director and futurist<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hannes Sj\u00f6blad<\/strong> \u2013 managing director and Co-founder of DSruptive Subdermals<\/li>\n<li><strong>David Jacoby<\/strong> \u2013 deputy head of Global Research and Analysis, Europe at Kaspersky<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marco Preuss<\/strong> \u2013 director of Global Research and Analysis, Europe at Kaspersky<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hQCDPLl3_Fo?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the discussion, the panel spoke about everyday life for augmented people and how values and opinions have changed around the topic over the years \u2013 what was once seen as odd is now accepted by the vast majority of people.\u00a0 Tilly and Bertolt went on to discuss the value that their arms have given them, along with how their confidence and mental well-being has been positively impacted by having prosthesis.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s the little things, they\u2019re what make the difference in everyday life, [Augmentation] changes how people feel about you and also how you feel about yourself. People treat you differently, people say, \u2018oh wow, that\u2019s cool, can you show me how that works?'\u201d <\/em><strong>Dr. Bertolt Meyer<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, a new report from Kaspersky shows that attitudes have changed drastically over the years, with more than a third (35%) of Europeans saying they have \u201calways been accepting\u201d of augmented people and 17% which say they are more accepting now than they were ten years ago.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Connectivity and security in human augmentation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Moving from how things are today to how things could change in the future, the panel looked at how devices are currently connected to the internet and how things might change in the future.\u00a0 Marco Preuss also warns that \u2018augmentation isn\u2019t just a security issue, it\u2019s about human rights and privacy too.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Moving onto the security and privacy concerns around augmentation, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marco_preuss?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">@marco_preuss<\/a> thinks src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>To regulate or not regulate\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The next part of the discussion moved quickly onto regulation: where security and privacy spring up, regulation usually follows \u2013 but whose job will it be to regulate smart prosthesis?\u00a0 The government or industry?\u00a0 All sides had a take on this, with some, such as David Jacoby saying that by working together, the development process would become that much easier. \u201cThe community must tell vendors \u2018this is what we want, this is how we\u2019ll use it,\u2019 and we need to build security [into] that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wrapping up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Wrapping up, the panellists discussed how the future may look, with augmentation technology becoming ever more advanced as technology continues its never-ending march forward.\u00a0 Will people become tempted to remove healthy limbs or organs, in order to upgrade to a \u201csuperior bionic limb\/ organ?\u201d\u00a0 Current legislation doesn\u2019t allow this, but things could very well change as time goes on.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about what was discussed,
