The eldest is so mature he has migrated to his own laptop (which I successfully \u2018upgraded\u2019 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/kaspersky-internet-security-parental-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">parental control<\/a> to prevent any inappropriate content from popping up in my son\u2019s PC). The younger kids are just getting started with their online life on my Apple iPad. This is when conscientious parents would ask me: \u201cHow do you manage digital entertainment for your kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I have to make a side note for those who are just about to discover this brand new world. Children are crazy about PCs. But this devotion should be managed: without something we call \u201cKids management\u201d this interest might turn into obsession with unpredictable consequences.\u00a0It can prove to be something of a juggling act trying to manage their online and offline time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get wrapped up in the idea that children and computers are\u00a0a bad mix. \u00a0The media is full of stories about obsession and addiction, but if managed properly it\u2019s easy to stay in control.\u00a0\u00a0Computer knowledge and know-how will be essential for future generations as they become more and more part of everyday life. \u00a0However, the challenge is to find an optimal balance between education and entertainment and them about native cut-off mechanisms and self-control.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-pullquote\"><p>People own #gadgets, not vice versa<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkas.pr%2F3tGK&amp;text=People+own+%23gadgets%2C+not+vice+versa\" class=\"btn btn-twhite\" data-lang=\"en\" data-count=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tweet<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195904\/ipad-for-kids-1-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5154\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195904\/ipad-for-kids-1-en.jpg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-1-en\" width=\"803\" height=\"602\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195900\/ipad-for-kids-2-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5155\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195900\/ipad-for-kids-2-en.jpg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-2-en\" width=\"812\" height=\"609\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To make sure your children stay safe online, consider installing a \u2018safe\u2019 browser. \u00a0There are lots of options here, including our <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/kaspersky-safe-browser\/id723879672?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kaspersky Safe Browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Locking your wallet<\/h3>\n<p>Making sure you lock down your iPad is important, but equally important is ensuring that purchases are locked as well. \u00a0There has been a lot of discussion about so-called \u2018freemium games\u2019 \u2013 games that are free to download but ask for in-app purchases for items \/ lives or other goodies. \u00a0These are all well and good if you\u2019re an adult with the knowledge of what you\u2019re doing, but a might not understand. \u00a0This can lead to huge problems for parents when they receive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/feb\/27\/apple-google-in-app-purchases-children-european-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">their bank statements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What can be done to restrict this? \u00a0Apple have now included a restrictions page in their settings, where you\u2019re able to turn off or password restrict purchases:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195859\/ipad-for-kids-3-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5156\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195859\/ipad-for-kids-3-en.jpg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-3-en\" width=\"910\" height=\"683\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To learn more about this,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/parental-controls-to-prevent-in-app-purchases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">follow the link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Iron curtain<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re paticularly concerned, you can simply disable everything and re-enable them when you need a specific feature, such as Face time.<\/p>\n<h3>Hocus-pocus with focusing<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s another way to control overly-curious children: it is the \u201cGuided Access\u201d feature (<em>Settings -&gt; General -&gt; Accessibility -&gt; Guided Access<\/em>). It\u2019s designed to keep a user focused on an individual task, distractionfree.\u00a0This allows your child to focus on one app at a time, instead of flicking between different apps continuously.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195851\/ipad-for-kids-4-en.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5157\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195851\/ipad-for-kids-4-en-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-4-en\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Everything under control<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cGuided Access\u201d has a number of useful features. For instance, you can disable touch input, \u2018Home\u2019 button, auto-rotation, volume control, virtual keyboard, and even chose active screen parts like clickable screen areas designed for app icons, which are not child-safe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195849\/ipad-for-kids-5-en-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5158\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195849\/ipad-for-kids-5-en-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-5-en\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Little gnome<\/h3>\n<p>And now the difficult part:\u00a0how to limit the time your child spends on the tablet without creating hysteria. \u00a0Third party apps used to be able to do this, however they were inefficent or didn\u2019t do everything you wanted, however now <em>Guided Access<\/em> gives you the tools for free.<\/p>\n<p>We call this tool \u201cLittle Gnome\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s like a small gnome living in the iPad: he cares about your children, shows movies, entertains them with games, but he may get tired and needs some rest every day. The Time Limit feature allows you to set the \u2018tablet time\u2019 for your kids, and the screen goes off as soon as the time is up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195847\/ipad-for-kids-6-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5159\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2014\/12\/05195847\/ipad-for-kids-6-en.jpg\" alt=\"ipad-for-kids-6-en\" width=\"875\" height=\"656\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Nothing beyond<\/h3>\n<p>And the last tip: make sure you don\u2019t have access to your personal or work emails or social accounts but if you do, try to make sure they\u2019re properly separated from your child as you wouldn\u2019t want to give them access to your Twitter or Facebook accounts, let along access to sensitive work email that could be accidentally deleted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have three kids.
