{"id":6497,"date":"2015-12-02T10:58:55","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T15:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kasperskydaily.com\/uk\/?p=6497"},"modified":"2020-02-26T15:11:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T15:11:26","slug":"wrong-password-behaviour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.co.uk\/blog\/wrong-password-behaviour\/6497\/","title":{"rendered":"The wrong way to use passwords"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Passwords have been around since the early days \u2014 in 200 B.C., the <a href=\"http:\/\/ancienthistory.about.com\/library\/bl\/bl_text_polybius6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Romans used them on a day-to-day basis<\/a> to organize and manage actions of military units.<\/p>\n<p>With the evolution to the digital age, everybody and their dog has a password or two, but with that said, this protective measure becomes very unreliable and insecure when people use passwords improperly.<\/p>\n<p>Kaspersky Lab <a href=\"https:\/\/press.kaspersky.com\/files\/2015\/08\/Kaspersky_Lab_Consumer_Security_Risks_Survey_2015_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analysed<\/a> how users protect their online accounts in a recent research study. It turns out that, almost one third of those surveyed have two or three similar passwords for <em>ALL<\/em> of their accounts. One in 10 of the respondents had passwords that are less than eight characters in length. On top of that, some of those questioned (12%) don\u2019t use capital letters, figures and\/or special characters to improve their passwords. Such combinations are not secure at all.<\/p>\n<p>Bad, right? But wait, there\u2019s more! Only a few memorise their passwords. More than a half of respondents store them on a piece of paper, on their phones or in text files on their computers. A quarter of respondents believe that they are safe, as they keep nothing important on their devices. Unfortunately, culprits do not only hunt for corporate data or government secrets: passwords and logins of every user are in themselves a favorite target of cybercriminals. Depending on their skills, culprits will find a way to use stolen login credentials: for example, they can hack your Internet bank or just use your Facebook account to spread viruses and spam.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Do your employees know the importance of a strong password? Here are three simple rules, which you should take into account.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf The myth that it\u2019s hard to invent and remember reliable password is just that: a myth. \u00a0There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.co.uk\/blog\/false-perception-of-it-security-passwords\/7036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some methods<\/a>, which help to invent and memorise several unique passwords at once.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf You need to pay special attention to the safety of your main email address, as the access to other accounts you can recover with the help of email notifications.
